In this Lesson we will share some simple rhythm exercises to give you a chance to practice the new chords while using “The Deep Relaxed Mouth Position.” We will also do our first two “Train-Time Chugging Rhythms!”

Exercises #1

First Practice Without the Harp
Create a steady rhythm by softly whispering TA as you draw air in, and TOO as you blow air out. Try this first without the harmonica. Do not speak out loud. Just whisper!


Exercise #2

Now Practice With The Harp
Whisper TA while drawing on holes 1 and 2 at the same time, and whisper TOO while blowing on holes 1 and 2 at the same time. Then repeat this pattern over and over for about 30 seconds. The way I will be writing this type of rhythm pattern is like this:

In hopes of supporting you in being totally clear on what I'm asking you to do, read below and then watch the video entitled "Training Wheels."

TA (1,2) means draw on holes one and two together at the same time while whispering TA (so you'll need to spread your mouth wide enough to play both holes one and two at the same time)

TOO (1,2) means blow on holes one and two at the same time while whispering TOO.

I will be using this format for all the rhythms to come.

IMPORTANT: For ALL of the upcoming beginning rhythm patterns, it is perfectly fine if you don't play the exact notes I'm asking. Getting close is good enough for now. What's more important is that you relax, enjoy yourself and practice the Deep Relaxed Mouth Position.

Train-Time Chugging Rhythm # 1: "First Attempt"

Your First “Train-Time Chugging Rhythm!”

On this pattern you will say “HA” twice while drawing on holes one and two and say “HOO” twice while blowing on holes one and two (as with the other examples you'll be playing hole one and two together at the same time)

Once again, please relax and enjoy yourself. Right now you are just laying down the tracks for the awesome Train-Time Chugging Rhythms soon to come.

Remember; don't worry if you don't play the patterns or the holes perfectly at first.

It's more important that you practice your Deep Relaxed Mouth Position and keep your tongue, jaw, lips, and of course your brain relaxed. When this all becomes automatic it will enable you to easily move on to more advanced techniques.
