Welcome to Level 2

This level contains four steps and will focus on the thing that helped me the more than anything else I've ever learned on the harmonica...

"High Speed Train-Time Chugging Rhythms!"

Goals for Level 2:

  • Learning JP's Favorite Basic Train-Time Rhythm Patterns (CHUGGING!!!!)
  • Being able to use your tongue as “The Harp Player's Drum Sticks”
  • Spicing up the Rhythms by adding new chords
  • Learning JP's tricks for “Letting Loose” and making up your own rhythm patterns.

Learning some of JP's simple tricks for playing along with other musicians. (This is not as hard as it may sound. We can still have tons of fun with the harp prior to the challenge of learning single notes in Level Three).

Harp Player's Drumsticks

This lesson is designed to support you in developing your ability to jam with other musicians as well as showing you a way you can take your train-time chugging to the next level.

Get out your “C” Harp and jam along with my Guitar on the upcoming video clip (taken from a section of):

“Harmonica Made Fun and Easy So You Don't Get Stuck: Getting Campfire-Ready"

In this clip when I refer to “The Safety Zone” I'm recommending that you play any notes you like between holes 4 and 7.

Deep Relaxed Mouth Position Quick Review

1. Place harp deep in mouth.

2. Angle harp 30 degrees down into lower lip so that the lower "unfolds."

3. Keep the upper lip relaxed and deep.

This technique will act as a foundation for almost everything to come, so if you not confident with this technique please review.

Click here to go back to Level 1 - Step 1 to review in depth.

The next two rhythms are designed to teach your tongue to dance.

The “T” and the “K” sounds can create well-defined rhythmic accents that will enable you to play at high speeds.

The "T" sound creates an accent in the front of the mouth, and how the "K" sound creates an accent in the back of the mouth.

I like to think of the "T" and the "K" sounds as the harmonica player's drumsticks. When you effectively learn to combine the two sounds you can increase your speed dramatically.

Click the player below to listen to me say “TICKA” at high speeds without the harmonica.

Train-Time Chugging on the “The General”

While playing holes 1 and 2 at the same time say “TUCKA” on the suck and “TICKA” on the blow.

Click the player below to listen to an audio example.

The upcoming video clip will enable you to jam along with me while playing “The General.”

Are you remembering to breath from the diaphragm? CLICK HERE for a Review.

Teaching Your Tongue to Dance

While playing holes 1 and 2 at the same time say “TUCKA” twice on the draw and “TICKA” twice on the blow.

THE NEXT LESSON: I will be showing you the rhythm patterns that changed my life as a harmonica player and taught me more about jamming than any other one thing I've ever learned. I'm excited. Are you?
