“Letting It Loose” is still one of the most enjoyable ways for me spontaneously make up stuff on the spot as a “one-man-band.” By learning this method, you will learn a way you can practice without being dependant on the support of a book, CD, DVD, or Guitar player to jam along with (and all you need is you, a harmonica, and a smile in your heart).
Home Base:
Play “Home Base” as many times as you like, and whenever you want, you can slide up to:
There are two tricks that may help:
1. Keep the “Tucka Toodle” pattern going steadily even while your mouth is sliding up the harp.
2. Keep coming back to “Home Base” as often as possible.
To add a little more spice here are some variations:
Try sliding up to notes higher than (3,4).
Try different combinations of notes. For example (3,4,5) or (1,2,3,4).
Try mixing and matching different rhythm patterns.
You can make up your own patterns or you can use “Favorite Rhythm Patterns” from Step 1 and Step 2. The three basic patterns we have gone over so far are:
Remember to frequently come back to “Home Base”.
Now, LET IT LOOSE any chance you get!!! Remember the more often that you can practice this the better (even if you can only practice for short periods of time).
Once again, I encourage you to take the harmonica with you everywhere you go so that you can practice at random unexpected opportunities throughout the day. (when transporting the harmonica remember to keep it clean in it's protective case. I like to use a zip-lock bag so that the harmonica can fit more easily in my pocket).
